Piatella Hash
Piatella hash is cold-cured ice water hash. The starting material is bubble hash of the highest quality grade made from freshly frozen cannabis, which rests airtight and chilled for several weeks after drying. During this time, it becomes creamy and as soft as butter. Piatella requires no heat, press or solvents and usually reaches 50 to 80 % THC. The process was developed in Barcelona.
This guide is intended for factual information and does not replace medical advice. In Germany, products containing THC are prohibited for people under 18.
What is Piatella hash?
Piatella, often also spelled Piattella, is a solvent-free cannabis concentrate. The name is usually traced back to the flat, plate-like shape in which the material cures. What defines Piatella, however, is not its shape but the combination of two steps:
- Only full melt bubble hash is used, which is the purest fraction from ice water extraction.
- This material then cures in the cold until its texture changes.
Uncle's Farm, a cannabis social club in Barcelona, is considered its place of origin. From there, the technique spread to Spain, Switzerland, Italy and the Netherlands. Today, many sellers use the name, including for goods that are not made using the complete process. You will find more on this in the section on authenticity further down.
Piatella hash production: an overview of the process
The production of Piatella follows a fixed sequence. The list describes what happens in each step and is not a set of instructions.
- Cannabis flowers are frozen directly after harvest. This material is called fresh frozen.
- The frozen flowers are moved in ice water. The brittle trichome heads break off and are separated by size using screens.
- Only the purest fraction, called full melt, moves on. It is usually freeze-dried.
- The dried resin is sealed airtight and stored chilled for several weeks. During this cold curing, the trichome heads bond into a homogeneous, soft mass.
The difference from classic hash lies in doing without heat. Moroccan block hash is sieved from dried material and pressed under pressure and heat. With Piatella, the consistency is created by time and cold alone. This largely preserves volatile terpenes. Our article on ice-o-lator and bubble hash explains in detail how ice water extraction works.
Piatella hash THC content
Piatella typically contains 50 to 80 % THC. This is because it consists almost entirely of trichome heads, the part of the plant with the highest cannabinoid concentration. For comparison: in 2016, conventional cannabis resin on the European market averaged around 17 % THC (Freeman et al., Addiction 2019).
| Product | Usual THC range | Production |
|---|---|---|
| Classic block hash | approx. 10 to 30 % | Sieved and pressed with heat |
| Frozen hash and frozen sift | approx. 40 to 70 % | Sieved or washed from frozen material |
| Piatella hash | approx. 50 to 80 % | Full melt bubble hash, cold-cured |
Which terpenes are most prominent depends on the starting strain. Myrcene brings earthy notes, limonene citrus notes and beta-caryophyllene spicy, peppery notes. The exact content of a batch can only be determined by laboratory analysis. Information without an analysis report cannot be verified. You will find more about frozen variants and their strength on the page about frozen hash.
White Piatella hash: what the light colour means
White Piatella refers to particularly light variants whose colour ranges from creamy white to light gold. The light colour is mainly the result of freeze-drying and little contact with oxygen. It indicates cleanly separated material but says nothing about a higher THC content. Brownish tones are caused by oxidation, longer storage or a darker starting strain.
Piatella price: why the concentrate is so expensive
Piatella is one of the most expensive types of hash. The price per gram is many times that of classic block hash. The reasons lie in the process:
- Fresh frozen material must be frozen directly after harvest and kept chilled throughout.
- Ice water extraction yields only a little resin from a large amount of flowers.
- Of this, only the full melt fraction is suitable, and the rest is used differently.
- Cold curing takes weeks and can hardly be accelerated.
Specific market prices cannot be stated seriously for Germany. There is no legal trade in THC hash here, and price information online usually comes from other countries or refers to CBD variants. A conspicuously low price, however, is an indication that the complete process was not used.
Recognising real Piatella: how to spot fake Piatella
Because the name is in demand, a lot of hash is sold as Piatella that is not. These features distinguish real Piatella from simple imitations:
| Feature | Real Piatella | Sign of a fake |
|---|---|---|
| Colour | Light gold to amber | Dark brown or greenish |
| Texture | Creamy, mouldable, forms fine threads when pulled apart | Crumbly, hard or runny |
| Smell | Intense and typical of the strain as soon as you open it | Weak, musty or artificially perfumed |
| Information | Strain, process and lab report are stated | Only the name Piatella without further information |
A runny mass suggests incomplete curing, while a crumbly one suggests starting material below the full melt grade. A note on colour: it is also influenced by the strain and is not proof on its own.
Piatella, frozen hash, static hash and rosin
Piatella is often confused with other modern concentrates. Frozen hash generally refers to hash made from frozen material. Static hash is dry-sieved resin that is cleaned using electrostatic charge. Rosin, on the other hand, is created when flowers or hash are pressed with heat and pressure, which makes it the opposite of the cold Piatella process. The article static and frozen hash: differences from Piatella compares the three hash terms directly.
Buying Piatella hash: what applies in Germany
Piatella with THC is cannabis within the meaning of the German Consumer Cannabis Act (KCanG), which has applied since 1 April 2024. The German Federal Ministry of Health summarises the rules in its questions and answers on the Cannabis Act. For adults aged 18 and over, the following applies:
- Possession of up to 25 grams is permitted in public and up to 50 grams at home. The limit applies to the weight, not to the THC content. This means that 25 grams of Piatella contain many times more THC than 25 grams of flowers.
- Cultivation associations may only supply cannabis to members in pure form, meaning as flowers or as hashish.
- Selling, shipping and online trading of THC cannabis are prohibited. So you cannot legally buy Piatella with THC online in Germany.
In the medical field, some providers now also offer hash products on prescription. Whether this includes a Piatella variant depends on the range in question. You will find a general overview of substances and how they are classified in the drug glossary.
Risks of high-potency hash
Cannabis can be addictive. In a large US population study, around 9 % of people who had ever used cannabis developed a dependence during their lifetime (Lopez-Quintero et al., Drug and Alcohol Dependence 2011). High-potency concentrates such as Piatella contain many times more THC per gram. This increases the risk of being overwhelmed, anxiety and problematic use.
Signs of a problematic pattern include, for example:
- You use more or more often than you intended.
- You carry on even though it harms you, your work or your relationships.
- When you stop, you experience irritability, sleep problems or inner restlessness.
